Winter is by far my favourite time of year in Cape Town. There is something magical about the cooler season – the air is fresher, the scenery is brighter and I have a constant urge to get out there and enjoy the spectacular winter days that come about once the season gets underway. This year, my winter to-do list includes a trip out to Ceres to see the snow, a drive to the Winelands to enjoy a festival or two, enjoying the Cape Town Winter Restaurant Specials and maybe even trying another shark cage diving adventure to enjoy the excellent visibility in our beautiful ocean. Get ready for a Winter to Remember!

Our South Africa climate is in the southern hemisphere,which means that the seasons are the reverse of those in Europe, the United States and everywhere else on the northern hemisphere.
Our country is surrounded by oceans on three sides, west, south and east. This feature together with the higher altitude of the large interior plateau accounts for its more temperate climate conditions, compared to other areas within the subtropical belt.
South Africa enjoys one of the world’s highest average daily hours of sunshine, a total of 8,5 sunshine hours per day, compared with for instance 3,8 in London, 6,4 in Rome and 6,9 in new York.

South Africa’s position on the earth globe between 22 and 34 degrees southern latitude, puts it within the subtropical belt of high pressure systems in winter and low pressure systems in summer, that circles the globe between 25 and 30 degrees southern latitude, producing a dry South Africa climate, with an abundance of sunshine.

In general, climate conditions in South Africa range from Mediterranean in the south-western corner of the country, to temperate on the interior plateau, and subtropical in the northeast. A small area in the northwest has a desert climate.

The warm north to south-flowing Mozambique-Agulhas current in the Indian ocean at the east coast and the cold south to north-flowing Benguela current in the Atlantic ocean at the west coast of our country, have an important effect on the South Africa weather within the country. The contrast in temperature between these two currents, largely accounts for the striking differences in climate and vegetation between the east and west coasts.

Another feature that influences the South Africa climate conditions inside our country is the variation in altitude in the physical geography of the country. South Africa has three main geographic regions, the great interior plateau, the escarpment of mountain ranges that rims the plateau on the east, south and west and the coastal belt, the area lying between the escarpment and the sea.

The wettest regions are the eastern provinces Mpumalanga, Freestate, Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal with an average annual rainfall of up to 900 mm. The average annual rainfall in the central area of the country is around 400 mm, decreasing west ward to less then 200 mm, leaving the western and north western regions of the country with semi-desert and desert type climates.

An exception to the overall rainfall pattern of the South Africa climate is the south-western part of the Western Cape province. Here we find a typical Mediterranean climate with the rainfall occurring during the winter period, coming in from the Atlantic ocean. The average annual rainfall for this area is 515 mm.

The Temperatures,…

Despite a latitude span of 13 degrees from south to north, average annual temperatures across the interior plateau are surprisingly uniform. There is hardly any increase in temperature from south to north, contrary to what one would have expected.
This is due to the increasing height of the interior plateau towards the northeast. The difference in average annual temperature between cape town at 17 degrees Celsius and Pretoria at 17,5 degrees Celsius over a distance of close to 1500 km for instance, is only half a degree Celsius.
Going from east to west, the story is quite different. The influence of the Mozambique-Agulhas current at the east coast and the Benguela current at the west coast on the South Africa climate, is considerable. The difference in average annual temperature between Durban on the east coast and Port Nolloth on the west coast for instance, is as much as 6 degrees Celsius.
The effects of these two currents can even be seen at the narrow Cape peninsula, where water temperatures average up to 4 degrees Celsius higher on the eastern Falsebay side, then on the western Cape town harbour side.
Our South Africa climate knows temperature variations ranging from cold, mild winters with day temperatures averaging 10 – 20 degrees Celsius, to warm, hot summers with day temperatures averaging 25 – 35 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius are fairly common in South Africa in summer. In regions like the lower Orange valley, the Karoo, the Mpumalanga, Lowveld and the North Coast of Kwa-zulu Natal, they can exceed 38 degrees Celsius.

Enjoy our South Africa climate, delightfully mild and pleasant all year round

Our South Africa weather has a subtropical quality all year round with mild and lovely sunshine conditions.

The underlying factors which form the foundation for the sunny, warm and pleasant weather conditions that are so characteristic for South Africa, making it a tourist top hit world-wide, are the altitude of the huge interior plateau combined with the stabilizing effects of the Indian and Atlantic oceans surrounding the country.

Compared to New York with its average 6.9 sunshine hours daily, Rome with 6.4 and London with 3.8 hours, South Africa with its average of 8.5 sunshine hours per day is one of the highest in the world.

Do not forget that the seasons on the southern hemisphere are the reverse of those in Europe and the United States and the rest of the northern hemisphere. Come and spend Christmas on one of our golden sunshine beaches.

In the Kwazulu Natal coastal and the Mpumalanga low-veld regions the summers are hot and humid with temperatures sometimes reaching the 40 degrees Celsius mark. The nights can become very soft and soothing.

During the summer period, Cape Town and surrounding regions usually experience sunny and dry weather conditions with little or no rain. To help keep temperatures within enjoyable limits of between 25 and 39 degrees Celsius, there is what the locals call “The Cape Doctor”. This is a system of south easterly winds which prevail in the region at this time of the year. Berg winds coming in down-slope the escarpment, bringing in the heat from the interior, see temperatures sometimes rise well beyond 30 degrees Celsius. The nights in Cape Town are balmy, but not uncomfortable, with a very nice atmosphere.

When the trees start shedding their leaves and the green grasslands and savannahs turn dry, brown and yellow, you know it’s autumn time, which is the period March, April and May. The Transition from summer to autumn is quite sudden, which makes the autumn season feel rather short.

Looking at South Africa as a whole, Autumn probably offers the best conditions from a weather and climate point of view. Across the country temperatures are pleasantly warm and not hot, but slowly becoming colder as the season gets on. Nights are cool, but not yet cold.

With the autumn period being less noticeable than in other parts of South Africa, the hot and humid summer conditions In the KwaZulu Natal coastal regions and the Mpumalanga low-veld will gradually change into the lovely and comfortably warm winter weather that these parts of the country are known for. With warm sunny days, balmy nights and not much wind, autumn in Cape Town is just great. In fact autumn and spring are the perfect seasons to visit Cape town.

The average temperatures in the winter vary from as high as 20 to 25 degrees Celsius during the day, to as low as -5 to 10 degrees Celsius at night time, which is quite an extraordinary drop. Snowfall in South Africa is quite rare and is only to be expected on the summits of the Drakensberg and the Cape Region mountain ranges above the 1500 meters mark.

Winter along the KwaZulu Natal coastal area and in the Mpumalanga Low-veld means that humidity levels have fallen to practically zero with hardly any wind. Nighttime and daytime temperatures are just right, enjoyable enough for that swim in the sea or perhaps a barbeque or “braai” outdoors.

Cape Town and the south western part of the Western Cape province is a different story. With its Mediterranean climate it gets most of its rain during the winter. There are a considerable number of cold, grey, cloudy and rainy days. But then again, these are interspersed with beautiful days that can be compared with the best that a British summer has to offer.

Like most other parts in the world, Spring time throughout the months August, September and October is the best time to enjoy our indigenous wild flowers. Cape Town in the last part of the winter would be the best choice for river rafting. For KwaZulu Natal that would be the summer period from November to February. Beach conditions are tops in KwaZulu Natal throughout the year, with warm and sunny conditions even in mid winter

Climate and Weather in South Africa

The highlight of Cape Town’s glamor spots, Clifton lies between Sea Point and Camps Bay. Clifton’s famous four beaches are the ideal hangout for beach lovers. The four small and beautiful beaches of Clifton are interlinked, with giant granite boulders dividing one from the next. Each individual sandy enclave has its own peculiar identity. 4th Beach is the busiest, with the young and the beautiful playing volleyball, throwing frisbees and sunbathing – but mostly trying to look cool. 3rd Beach is frequented by the gay population of Cape Town, while 2nd Beach is the sunning spot of the young bohemians and university students of the city. 1st Beach is the least popular (but no less beautiful) than the other three. Clifton is wonderfully sheltered from summer’s south-easterly wind, but not many people actually brave the cold water. Crayfish Heaven and Fisherman’s Delight On Your Cape Town Holiday

Continuing our West Coast journey from Cape Town along the Atlantic coastline, we are venturing along the path taken by Vasco De Gama back in 1497 and following in his footsteps to discover the beauty of Paternoster.
Heading north from our overnight stop at The Farmhouse Hotel, Langebaan, we follow the road out of town past the Fossil Park and on towards Vredenburg, a town which is rather more of a business hub for the area than of any particular interest for us traveller’s.

Cape Columbine Lighthouse                                                                                                                            Instead of heading directly to Paternoster, take time to visit the Cape Columbine nature reserve, lying south west of the fishing village, where you will discover the breath-taking beauty and wildness that makes up this rocky coastline. Untouched by the momentum of human progression, the area is devoid of development with the Cape Columbine lighthouse being the only building. If kayaking is your thing, then this is the place to be! Said to be some of the best kayaking available. The wealth of wildlife you are able to view close up is amazing. Getting up close to such sea creatures as the whales, seals and dolphins means that you get the ultimate close encounter without getting into the water! From birdlife to marine life, you are sure to appreciate the peace and tranquility that Cape Columbine offers. Why not top it off with a visit to the lighthouse and view the spectacular vista out over the reef to the endless magnificence of the Atlantic Ocean? Climb the spiral staircase to gaze out across the massive outcrop called Castle Rock and marvel that this obviously much needed saviour of lives did not get built until 1936.

Paternoster                                                                                                                                                      From Cape Columbine it is only a short drive to the fishing village of Paternoster, given its name from the prayers of shipwrecked Portuguese sailors, meaning “Our Father”  The first thing you will notice as you drive in, is the bright light reflecting off the white-washed stone buildings, the backdrop being the cobalt-blue sea and the long, white sandy beach which slopes gently into the ocean. It is as if time has stood still; the roundabout stopped for a moment to allow you to hop off and explore. Watch the brightly coloured fishing boats landing their catch by pulling the boats straight onto the sands, selling their wares from the boats themselves. Or run your eye over the snoek drying in the sun, hung up in rows towards the back of the beach. Can there be any fresher produce on your barbeque or braai, as South African’s call them?
It is here that you can experience land based crayfishing, as well as by boat, along with diving and spear fishing excursions. If you are looking for something a little more rowdy, why not try a beach buggy trip? One of my favorite pastimes in this part of the world, is watching the vast numbers of birds, including the Oyster catcher, Sacred Ibis and other small wading birds that scuttle along the waters edge, seemingly oblivious to your intrusion in their lives. The event is ethically sound and embraces socially responsible principles and aims to reach out to Knysna’s residents and visitors to promote literacy as well as the best South African authors.  Two of the prominent literary figures taking part in this years event are Mandy Wiener and Margie Orford. The festival stands for the improvement of peoples minds through reading, creativity, and production. The Knysna Speed Festival welcomes you to Knysna, the heart of the Garden Route. This year’s Knysna Speed Festival is sure to entertain any and all speed lovers from all across South Africa for a week of pure adrenalin and fun filled action for the whole family!   The Knysna Speed Festival story began in 2009 with the running of the first Knysna Hill climb. From humble beginnings the event exploded in 2010 and, although it is a relatively new fixture on the South African motor sport calendar, it has immediately positioned itself as one of the premier events on the South African motorsport scene.  While the Hill climb will always remain the core event, the Knysna Speed Festival will be far more than just a single motor sport race. The festival will incorporate a variety of events that will not only benefit charities and provide significant economic benefit for the town of Knysna, but will offer exciting activities for participants and spectators.  In addition to the Renault Knysna Hillclimb, events to be included in the festival are the Knysna Motor Show, the Knysna Kart Grand Prix, Knysna Slot Car challenge, Knysna Soap Box Derby, and the Knysna Speed Festival Charity Golf Day.

The Knysna Oyster Festival is probably one of the most popular annual events in the Western Cape. It is also something of a celebration of the good life and sport and has taken place every year since 1983, where it began as the Knysna Winter Festival – a combination of sport that drew people to Knysna during the quiet winter season.  Marketed as the ‘Best 10 Days of Your Winter’, the Knysna Oyster festival is spread across two weekends that promise constant fun and activities for the whole family. The sport aspect of the Oyster Festival has evolved into two major sporting events – the Pick n Pay Cape Times Forest Marathon (half marathon), and the Pick n Pay Weekend Argus Rotary Cycle Tour, now a two-day event that is the biggest of its kind in the country.   The 2010 Knysna Oyster Festival promises almost 100 mid-week events that include some exciting new additions: The Geo Oyster Geocaching Competition (a fun way to navigate around the greater Knysna Basin), the Pick n Pay Fun Event for the disabled (the first time the Oyster Festival is hosting a sports event for disabled competitors), the Navigation Drift Dive Challenge (an attempt by scuba divers to navigate their way under water from The Heads to Thesen’s Jetty without surfacing), and the Night of 1 000 Pictures (two-night exhibition of photography, illustrations and paintings to raise funds for the Knysna Hospice by local artists).  Other mid-week events will include the Wade Bales Wine Festival, the Pick n Pay Oyster and Wine Mardi Gras, the Knysna Lyster Company Shucking Competition and sports events such as the Scottish Leader Whisky Bowls Tournament and the Protea Hotel Knysna Quays Waitron Race.  But of course the stars of the show are undoubtedly the oysters, served naked, cooked or garnished at over 30 local Tabasco Hot spots throughout the festival.

Pick ‘n Pay Weekend Argus Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour: The Pick ‘n Pay Weekend Argus Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour is part of the prestigious Mazda Mountain Bike Marathon Series. Mountain Bike Events take place on Saturday 7 July and the road race events on Sunday 8 July. Knysna is world famous for the quality of its mountain biking routes. Irrespective of which route you choose to match your fitness – you will be exposed to beautiful farmland, fauna and flora while you are able to test your abilities to the maximum. The organizers have listened to the riders and age limits have been adjusted in order to ensure that fun riders have the maximum amount of FUN. Routes include access to privately owned sections of property that are usually closed to the public. There are also prizes for the fun riders and plenty of pre and post-race activities to be enjoyed over the race weekend. Distance(s): Mazda Marathon 85km. FPC Half-marathon 42km. There is also a 15km fun ride Race Day: Saturday 7 July.

Wedge Classic                                                                                                                                         Location: Plettenberg Bay                                                                                                                         Dates: 10 Jul 2012 to 16 Jul 2012

This is South Africa’s biggest body boarding contest and Plett’s longest running event!  As the 3rd and final events before the S.A champs on the SA Body Boarding Association circuit with points counting towards the crowning of the SABA champions this is an event not to be missed.  The event expects to attract more than 150 entrants many of whom are South Africa’s best body boarders. The contestants come from all around the country and are ready to battle each other for the coveted “King of the Wedge” title.  In addition to the body boarding, the South African Jet Ski Association will be having the 6th leg of their National Series in the Bay on Saturday the 16th. The race will include some of South Africa’s best Jet Ski Racers, including 3 former world champions, 12 Riders who have represented South Africa internationally, and many other local riders. There are 6 different divisions with 3 races in each, so there will be 18 exciting and thrilling heats of top quality Jet Ski racing!  The Wedge in Plett is one of South Africa’s most famous and desired body boarding venues and this event has a long standing tradition in South Africa. A firm favorite on the body boarding calendar. Come and support these contestants as the beach should be as busy as the waves.

The Knysna Forest Marathon is held annually during the Knysna Oyster Festival and is always a great success.  Participants can take place in either the 42.2km full marathon or the 21.1km half-marathon. This is a favorite on the running calendar.  Entries are limited to 1000 runners for the full marathon and 5500 for the half, so it is advisable to book early to avoid disappointment. The vibrant Rastafarian community of Knysna invites Rasta’s and visitors from all walks of life, from South Africa and abroad to participate in the annual Rasta Earth Festival. This colorful, rich festival celebrates the Rastafarian way of life – their food and music, as well as the philosophy behind this sometimes misunderstood faith.  Judah Square in Knysna plays host to ten days of ceremonies, music and art exhibitions – all in celebration of His Majesty Haile-I Selassie-I’s Earthday (Birthday) and Emancipation Day. The festival includes seven days of church ceremonies (Nyahbingh) and guides will be on hand to explain the rituals and sacred rites. Two days of Music Splash will ensure that everyone dances to the same beat before the festival concludes with the Emancipation Celebration, celebrating the abolition of slavery.  The Day of Emancipation starts with dancing and the singing of traditional songs before participants and guests are treated to hot chocolate and bread. Rastafari wear traditional clothing, but everyone is encouraged to join in and celebrate their freedom.  Judah Square in Knysna was established in 1993 and is the administrative Rasta capital of the southern cape. This year’s dazzling Wedding Exhibition will be held at the Garden Route Mall, George.  The Exhibition features fashion shows and demonstrations and boasts an extensive fusion of exhibitors from cars and cakes to flowers and photos, all under one roof. The event is presented in spring to give service providers the opportunity to aim their marketing at those getting married in the summer season.

This year is an extra special one as we are celebrating 200 years of George and introducing another twist to the tale of food and wine pairing decadence with an extravagant theme… “Life is a masquerade” is the first themed Gourmets & Gourmands evening.  Restaurants and wine farms are already putting the final touches to their menu pairings, according to a famous foodie, pairing is an expression of a lifelong exploration of wine and food, an endeavor of passion; a passion to be shared. The popularity of food and wine pairings has increased in recent years, so much so that it has become commonplace to adding wine pairing as something special to the usual dining experience.  So, whilst the decadence of the evening’s events is festive, there is more to it as the funds raised will go towards the learners of and fantastic work done at the Carpe Diem School.

Here’s something to make your mouths water and the sweat drip. The Honey Trail, a three-day stage MTB race, will run from Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay from 9 to 11 September 2011, overnighting in George and Knysna. The route will take riders along the Outeniqua Mountains, from sparse Karoo vegetation through lush seaboard forests. The name of the race was inspired by the Khoi name for the mountain range that borders the area: ‘Outeniqua’ means ‘man laden with honey’.  The total distance is expected to be 260 kms: 90 km – Mossel Bay to George; 100 km – George to Knysna; and 80 km – Knysna to Plettenberg Bay. The route will stay south of the Outeniqua Mountains and whilst there are always be climbs, all will be rideable. Distances may appear lengthy, but will not include difficulty ratings to awaken undue apprehension in a rider’s heart. The objective is to ride from start to finish, without setting foot on the track.  The entry fee will include an average of 4star accommodation in hotels and B&B’s and lunch on all 3 days. The finish of Day One will be at Fancourt and early entries will be able to book their accommodation at this prestigious hotel. Day Two will start at Fancourt and end at Portland Manor in Knysna.  Again, early entries are invited to book a night’s stay at luxurious Portland – a sweet deal. But later entries need not fear the beautiful Knysna Hollow, Phantom View River Resort and Bamboo Guesthouse are ready to welcome “bath you in honey”! The finish will be at the Crescent Country Hotel in Piesang Valley in Plettenberg Bay.  Entrants can choose the race package and still add partners/ spectators to the accommodation, There will be a number of options regarding supper which will be for the riders’ own account. This will be an exciting cycling holiday weekend. Any surplus from the event will be applied to benefit Development and Transformation rider’s in the Southern Cape. At present, there are no events supporting this.  The Honey Trail tag line is “It’s all about the experience” and what an experience this stage race promises to be, encompassing the length of the glorious Garden Route in spring!

A lifestyle festival that is supported by the international gourmand society, the Chaîne de Rôttisseurs and the South African Chefs Association, is surely an event to make your mouth water. A notably enthusiastic Francois Ferreira commented that “the festival will offer exactly what the name says: a showcase of all the gourmet delights the Southern Cape has to offer under one roof. Local chefs will use products from the area to tempt the palates of food lovers and to showcase their craft.”The heart of the festival will be the Eden School of Culinary Art which is situated at Label Leaders House on the school grounds of PW Botha College. Existing buildings will be extended by tents and up to eight popular restaurants will present their food creations to the public, experts and enthusiasts alike. Patrons will be able to indulge in bite sized shares of restaurant creations at every stand, whist they can sample the full bodied bests from a variety of winemakers. Cocktail lounges will provide the perfect platform to mix and mingle the twine (your love for food and that for wine) in a relaxed environment.Some of the participating restaurants include the Turkish influences of Kafé Şerefe, The Rose on York, Serendipity, The Girls, Trans Karoo, Chef Alma @ Groenvlei in Sedgefield and La Locanda for an Italian twist. To give the event some extra flavor, a street food lane will offer traditional dishes. This “lekker lane” will give festival guests the opportunity to feast on dishes like pap and sheba, pea soup and roosterkoek, breyani and afval (offal).  Once the extraordinary taste sensations at the festival tents have inspired patrons to develop their culinary skills, they can attend a series of workshops in the main hall of the school of culinary art. These workshops will be presented by local chefs like Karen du Plessis from Unilever, Chef Dario Soresi from La Locanda, and François himself. Workshops on Brandy and Port, and sessions on the secrets of wine cultivars like Chardonnay will be presented by winemakers like Meyer Joubert of Joubert Tradouw in Barrydale, Ladismith Wines & Oudtshoorn Winary. True jazz lovers will have the opportunity to see some of the country’s greatest jazz talents in action during the annual Plett Festival (previously known as the Whiskey, Whales & Jazz Festival) in Plettenberg Bay from 18-26 September. The festival has been expanded this year to a week-long celebration featuring whiskey tastings, superb jazz performances and spectacular whale safaris as well as loads of sporting opportunities.  The festival officially kicks off on Saturday, 18 September, with the welcoming of the whales and the opening concert at The Whitehouse. Golfing enthusiasts can get their weekend off to a great start with the Golf Day at the immaculate Goose Valley Golf Course. More adventurous visitors can gear up for the adrenaline rush of the challenging Robberg Express multi-sport event. The Robberg Express includes a 40 km mountain biking course through the Harkerville Forest on gravel roads and single tracks through sections of indigenous forest, a 10 km trail run traversing million year-old rock formations on the Robberg Peninsula and a 10 km ocean paddle in the beautiful Plettenberg Bay. Participants can enter as individuals or relay teams of two or three persons. Athletes can also participate in individual disciplines. Event organisers have also added a shorter version the Robberg Raggie with half distances in each discipline.  Blue note events are staged throughout the week with artists of international calibre appearing at fu.shi fusion cuisine, Gilly’s Grill, Surf Cafè and Bramon Wine Estate. The Heritage Day Jazz concert at Simunye promises a celebration of true music.  The highlight of the weeklong festivities will most definitely be the Jazz Fusion Concert on Saturday. Don’t miss top talent fresh off international jazz stages for an electric combination of eclectic classic and contemporary jazz intertwined with the unmistakable rhythms of Africa. Well-known performers such as Xolani Faku and friends, Sangam, Tucan Tucan, Offshore, Ben Badenhorst and Haydn Gardner will entertain the crowds.  For the youngster, the Lunchbox Theatre is bringing their ever-popular production The Whale Show to Plettenberg Bay to add to the festivities. This multi-lingual, interactive show promises to have audiences spell-bound wit/ah catchy //aastory-telling, mimes, puppets and scintillating music. Bitou Tourism will also be sponsoring shows at The Crags Primary, Phakamisani Primary in Kwanokuthula, Formasa Primary in New Horizons and Kranshoek Primary School.  The festival draws to a close with a spectacular street party on Saturday.

The 2012 Strawberry Festival will take place at Redberry Farm in Geelhoutboom, George from Friday 21 to Saturday 22 September 2012.  The Strawberry Festival is one of the most popular family events of the year attracting both locals and visitors who come along to experience a day out in the fresh air in a safe, farm environment. Proceeds go towards the ongoing marketing of the route to encourage more people to visit this wonderful part of the world which incorporates parts of George, Herold, Mossel Bay and Wilderness. Employment opportunities for the local community are then created and a portion is also donated to local charities. There is always a wide variety of stallholders exhibiting good food, local wines and cheeses, fresh veggies, herbs and arts and crafts. Plenty of entertainment to keep both young and old busy from the beer tent, to the exciting miniature steam train, the ‘strawberry express’ and ‘bubble balls’ on the dam. A new trail run through the district for the energetic. Pony rides, strawberry picking, strawberry eating competitions, zorbing, paint ball target shooting, jumping castles, tractor rides and the exciting Grand Opening of the Strawberry Maze will add to 2 full days of family fun!  The primary school ‘scarecrow’ building challenge theme for 2012 is ‘Farmyard’. The entries will be on display during the Festival and the winning school will receive R5 000 along with the floating Trophy.  So if you’re visiting George, Wilderness or any other part of the Garden Route in September, be sure not to miss the Strawberry Festival for guaranteed family fun in an outdoor farm environment! Since the inception of Africa’s first and only Elvis Festival two years ago, Storms River has experienced a retro revival like you wouldn’t believe!   The Marilyn’s 60’s Diner is home to this distinctive music journey ‘The Elvis Festival Africa’ every year where you may just find yourself hopelessly lost in the 50’s!  This year’s theme will be ‘Elvis Meets his Friends’, bringing you the likes of Roy Orbison, Diana Ross, Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart, Grease and a many more 50’s and 60′s legends to the stage. This festival will rock the drabbest jailhouse and get the dustiest of blue-suede shoes a-dancing.  And you don’t need to be an Elvis fan – there’s something for laaities and ladies alike. The 2011 Eden Challenge (200-260km’s) is the ultimate 30 hour event for the top teams. The teams can expect classic adventure racing terrain. Real Southern Cape splendor! Expect an ’Amazing Race” experience with great mountain biking, awesome scenic hikes and brilliant paddling.  I haven’t seen an AR like this before, so expect something fresh. Navigational skills will dictate your time spent out there. All maps & seconds instructions will be compiled by GIS specialist. If you’re a multi sport guru, this one is for you! Event layout: Teams and their support crew will be separated at the start. The event starts off with a hiking section and race packs must be prepared for the first night hike. Expect a hike of 70k’s, bike 150k’s and paddle 40k’s.

The annual SPCA Carols by Candelight is taking place at the Hyatt Regency Oubaai Golf Resort & Spa. This year’s event will be filled with caring as the proceeds of the event will be donated to the Garden Route branch of the SPCA to further the incredible work they are doing in the Eden District to educate people and assist animals in need. The evening will be filled with entertainment and candlelit ambience, accompanied by the lyrical expertise of Voldi George and the South Cape Children’s Choir conducted by Jan-Erik Swart.   Tickets are available at the event at R20 per person and include a candle. The event always starts in the traditional  way, with a whip. At the crack of the whip they brave the Montagu Pass and the 55km that lies ahead of them. As the day continues and the cyclists enter the Little Karoo the temperature rises, the conditions become harsh and difficult. After 52km and only 3km remaining the sight of the Daskop turn off is a welcome one and the Louvain sign post is even more welcome. Distance: 100km, 45km and 2km

The annual Stilbaai Arts & Crafts Fair is being held in the Stillbaai Community Hall from 17 to 19 December 2012. The fair starts at 9.30am.  Come and do some Christmas shopping and you will be contributing to a good cause. The annual craft fair is run by the Stilbaai Animal Protection Society as an annual fundraiser.   On sale you will find high quality decor items including quilts, home furnishings, toys, home-made produce and indigenous plants. The Farm Kitchen Coffee Shop will be offering delicious food and drinks (all made with the freshest of organic fruit and vegetable and free range eggs and meat).

Games and activites will also be on offer for the kids and teens in your lives.

December is hot on our heels! Good news is that this means that it’s almost time again for the Bottomless Barrels Weltevrede Wine Festival with Live performances by new popular local Afrikaans band Adam and Emo Adams!   Weltevrede & Tramonto will be giving away accommodation, wines and bubblies! Last year it was the launch of the Vanilla Chardonnay and this year we will be entertaining you with a short food and wine pairing, included in the ticket price.  The Kids Corner with jumping castle will provide a bit of rest for weary parents whilst enjoying the variety of food stalls & bottomless barrels of the finest Weltevrede Wines!

The summer brings with it, just like Father Christmas, a festival of fun in its festive bag, and one of the best fun family events is the Great Brak Grabadoo cycling and running event, taking place on 31 December 2011.  By far the biggest sports event in the Southern Cape this summer, with 1000 entries in 2009, Race organisers have already received queries from as far as Namibia about the event. The mountain bike and road bike events have proven to be extremely popular every year with biking enthusiasts and everyone from beginners to those serious cyclists training for the Argus find great fun (and training) in participating. Once again, there will be a 5km and 10km walk, the ideal opportunity to rope in the entire family and walk off those extra Christmas pounds. Whilst mountain bikers can choose 15, 35 or even 55km routes. Road bikers can choose between the 20 or 40km routes. All the routes traverse the picturesque area surrounding Great Brak River, and those in the know will tell you that this sleepy town is one of the most beautiful scenic splendours along the Garden Route, and that there is no better way to get up close and personal with its charm than when your tackies hit the tar or you pedal for pleasure.  The first 1 000 entrants will receive a Go-Multi cycling magazine with their race numbers, so get your ducks in a row and start practicing for 31 December to be able to ring in the New Year with a healthy advantage (as well as a Great Brak Grabadoo medal).   All riders taking part in CSA sanctioned events are required to be a Member of CSA for the year in which the race takes place, or to have a valid day license for every day of participation. Membership or a day license is a race entry requirement and is thus a prerequisite to enter a race.

Events 2012 – Garden Route

Posted by helen on September 8th, 2011The tranquillity and peace of a valley, covered in its early morning mists with the sun catching the dew and transforming them into sparkling jewels is not something we readily think of when we think of the bustling, vibrancy of Cape Town. But come with me on a journey of discovery through the oldest wine making region of South Africa and I will show you how the two apparent opposites easily knit together to form a distinctive quality other cities cannot reproduce, making Cape Town one of the worlds most exciting cities to explore. Groot Constantia Estate Minutes from the centre of town the glorious green swathe of the vines greet you as you enter the valley cradled in the protection of Table Mountain, allowing this unique microclimate to produce some of the finest South African wines available. One of the first things you will notice, apart from the grapes and vineyards, is the period Cape Dutch homesteads of considerable size and bearing. Many of these homes are now luxury hotels and guesthouses, such as The Alphen where polished wood floors and sparkling chandeliers grace the reception rooms, lending an air of past glory and gentility. Winding your way through the wine estates themselves, you will unwrap an intimate wine route of only seven wine estates dating back to 1685, when the first saplings arrived in the Cape from France. The outstanding growing conditions, coupled with the gentle, sunny slopes of Table Mountain, soon conspired to produce excellent crops. Today the original, vast estate of Simon Van der Stel, who was the 1st Governor of the Cape, is split into three; Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia and Buitenverwachting, meaning “Beyond Expectation” and all three are still producing wines of international quality. Constantia Don’t pass through Constantia valley without a visit to the historic Manor House and wine museum at Groot Constantia, the granddaddy (or perhaps that should be grandmother!) of them all! One of the beauties of these stunning estates is the ability to order picnic baskets and sit under the majestic oak trees, sipping the chilled wine of the farm of choice and drinking in the impressive views, many of which stretch all the way down to False Bay on the Indian Ocean side of the Table Mountain range. Cape Town Wine Route – Constantia Valley in The Heart of The City

If you’re looking for an all-day activity to make sure you incorporate every aspect of the Cape Town experience into your holiday, look no further than the following best things to see in Cape Town. They are the most beautiful, historical, calming, and invigorating attractions you don’t want to miss out on. Table Mountain from Robben Island With a myriad of different activities, a tantalizing view of the Cape coast with Table Mountain as its focal point and an historical context that rivals some of the World’s most famous sites, Robben Island is one place you don’t want to miss. Robben Island was the former prison where Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first democratic president was once incarcerated. This is only a very small portion of the great history that lies within the island; you are able to experience all of its history first hand, if you take the small half an hour luxury ferry trip, a tour of the island, and a tour of the prison by a former political prisoner of the apartheid era. You will need to leave about 4 hours free for the trip itself and booking in advance is advisable (it is so popular!). The ferry leaves daily from the Clock Tower precinct at the V&A Waterfront. A trip to Cape Town would also not be complete if a visit to the V&A Waterfront is not made. The Waterfront is THE center of activity in Cape Town; it is home to shops ranging from the small African craft stalls of the Red Shed to the global brands of modern society. It is renowned for exquisite food served in one of the World’s most beautiful settings where you can choose to sit in the warm sunshine under a sun umbrella taking in the ambiance or gazing up at iconic Table Mountain or watching the boats glide in and out of the harbour. There is always something going on to catch your eye. If you still find yourself with time to spare, you may like to take one of the many boat tours that are offered around the bay or going to see one of the shows or various musical performances. Going to the Waterfront and experiencing everything it has to offer is an all-day event, maybe even more, so go prepared to stay awhile! You can spend the day tasting great wine, food and atmosphere in award winning vineyards. The Stellenbosch wine tour incorporates great scenery with a vast array of wineries to choose from – small, boutique wineries to large co-operatives; all with wines known to be some of the best in South Africa and all with their own distinctions, beautiful manor houses, great gardens. Talking of gardens, to finish off, the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens provide a perfect escape from the world for a day of tranquil pleasure. The gardens are filled with indigenous flowers of South Africa, great lawns with over hanging trees – perfect for picnics, and beautiful ponds, filled with wildlife. There are many paths you can take to walk through the gardens and explore everything it has to offer; this can take up to a full day or just a few hours, it is totally up to you. Having spent a full day in the gardens you can then choose to wind down whilst watching the many concerts that are on throughout the summer months, in one of the glorious late evenings under the mountain. Cape Town Holiday Adventures Start Right Here!

For the birding enthusiast, Cape Town and the surrounding areas offers a number of reserves and parks that make bird watching an excellent outing opportunity. Sixty of the 86 endemics in South Africa and 42 of its 84 near-endemics are found in the Western Cape region. This area is also home to fynbos, forest and wetlands and other varied habitats. This area is also a feeding ground for many sea birds, especially just off the shore of the Cape, where the cold currents of the Benguela and warmer Agulhas currents meet. The best viewing is during winter months, when at least three species of albatross, a number of petrels and shearwaters, and other species can be seen. You will be able to view an average of nineteen pelagic species at any time of the year. What You’ll Find Rondevlei Nature Reserve – A quick 15 minute drive from central Cape Town in Grassy Park, Rondevlei is a haven for those seeking an alluring oasis for solitude, nature walks, or an outlet to uplift the spirit. Among the flats and wetland of the Rondevlei Reserve you’ll find: *Duck *Heron *Egret *Grebe *African Spoonbill *White Pelican *Darter *Malachite Kingfisher *Ethiopian Snipe (after water levels drop in Autumn) *Whitebacked Mousebird. Cape Peninsula National Park is mostly a coastal fynbos with rock and sand strewn shoreline. For the adventurous, spend time in search of this reserve’s Hottentot Button-qual; difficult to find but worth the effort! Strandfontein Sewage Works – This marvelous reserve is home to over 100 species including the African Marsh Harrier and the Greater Flamingo. West Coast National Park – Home to a large population of migrant shorebirds, this wetland area is made up of vast coastal shurblands. Birds you’ll find here: *Southern Black Korhaan *Black Harrier *Grey-backed Cisticola *Lesser Double Collared Sunbird *Chestnut-banded Plovers.
